This role manages the overall cost and performance of Owens & Minor’s transportation network, focusing on reducing transportation costs and improving overall performance across assigned region(s). The Transportation Manager also manages regional Dedicated Contract Carriage relationships, ensuring partners meet customer requirements and drive key metrics. They will partner with Area and Distribution Center Leadership to oversee and lead transportation strategy, including fleet sizing, route analysis/recommendations, common carrier selection, routing guide development, inbound performance, RFP support, and KPI/metric implementation. Additionally, this role works with Area Operations Leadership to develop and implement transportation performance improvement projects in support of the company’s overarching transportation strategy.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manages the overall cost and operational performance of the dedicated fleet within assigned region.
  • Ensures proper equipment utilization, customer requirement implementation, and use of common carriers.
  • Develops a transportation strategy designed to lower overall delivery expense while improving productivity and customer service measurements.
  • Implements a common carrier strategy to partner with cost-effective and reliable carriers, including participating in quarterly business reviews.
  • Develops and implements a management system focused on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure and improve delivery performance, asset utilization, customer quality, inbound delivery, and other measures.
  • Partners with DC Operations to support both day-to-day and strategic initiatives.
  • Manages relationships with carrier/courier companies and other transportation-related vendors providing services to assigned region(s).
  • Collaborates with Implementation and Commercial Teams to ensure success during all customer transitions.
  • Participates in transportation sourcing events led by the Transportation Procurement Team as a regional leader. Sourcing events include less-than-truckload (LTL), truckload (TL), intermodal, local delivery, and asset sourcing events.
  • Complies with all Department of Transportation (DOT), governmental, safety regulations, policies, and standards.
  • Stays informed of all regulatory changes impacting the management of O&M’s dedicated fleet and common carriers, and disseminates pertinent information to corporate and division management.
  • Performs additional duties as directed.

Qualifying Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required; concentration in transportation, supply chain, or logistics preferred.
  • 7 or more years of relevant transportation operations experience; previous transportation supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • Or any combination of relevant education and experience to meet the above requirements.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in Transportation Management System (TMS) planning and optimization, including planning and managing shipments.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels across the organization (executives, management, DC teammates).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively reduce costs and/or improve asset-based transportation networks across multiple facilities.
  • Previous experience managing multiple sites providing both inbound and outbound services.
  • Ability to perform meaningful analysis of the regional transportation network and communicate effectively.
