Triage Analyst - Autonomous Trucking

Employment Type: Full-time

Position Overview

Waabi, founded by AI pioneer and visionary Raquel Urtasun, is an AI company building the next generation of self-driving technology. With a world-class team and an innovative approach that unleashes the power of AI to “drive” safely in the real world, Waabi is bringing the promise of self-driving closer to commercialization than ever before. Waabi is backed by best-in-class investors across the technology, logistics and the Canadian innovation ecosystem.

Waabi is developing an autonomous trucking solution capable of learning safe and effective driving behaviors within a highly realistic simulator. A key aspect of this is the ability to efficiently measure the quality of driving behaviors, from early conflicts to collision severities. As a Triage Analyst, you will evaluate driving behaviors in simulation, closed-course testing, and public roads operation. You will determine effective ways to communicate your findings, including thorough documentation, and support the creation of comprehensive scenario sets used in development and for the safety case of driverless autonomy operation.

Given our novel approach to self-driving technology, you will work on groundbreaking new methods that are highly automated and self-maintaining by leveraging generative AI. You will influence the design of highly automated tools to validate product and system requirements across all testing modalities. A good understanding of how trucks work and are operated will be required to be successful in this role. Contributing to our collaborative remote-first work environment by working closely with colleagues from other areas, continuously growing, improving, and sharing your skills will enable you to have a strong impact at Waabi.

Responsibilities

  • Execute the review process for a driverless system, including discovering issues, reporting to appropriate owners, and coordinating resolutions through excellent root cause analysis.
  • Act as a liaison between the Systems Engineering team and the autonomy software development teams to drive progress towards Waabi’s product and safety goals.
  • Help drive Waabi’s safety culture through the application of safety standards and methodologies in your area of responsibility across all supporting teams at Waabi, including Systems Engineering, Hardware, and Software.
  • Support the documentation and tracing of all product and system requirements to tests and their executions.
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance Waabi’s behavioral evaluation capabilities, look for novel approaches, identify and apply lessons learned, and ensure detailed and comprehensive documentation that is easily accessible.
  • Work with external partners on gathering data and information related to driving behaviors of trucks, as well as on supporting a strong safety case for the complete self-driving system.

Qualifications

  • Required: Undergraduate degree.
  • Preferred: Undergraduate or Master's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in automotive, robotics, aerospace, or a related industry.
  • Experience with requirements and metrics for driving behavior evaluations.
  • Experience with root-causing complex systems in structured and unstructured testing.
  • Experience with methods and standards such as STPA, SOTIF (ISO 21448), and/or UL 4600.
  • Strong fundamentals in mathematics, engineering, and physics.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts or data in a simple-yet-accurate manner.
  • Excellent data analysis skills with modern tools such as Python or Matlab.
  • Open-minded and collaborative leader eager to provide guidance and willing to help others.
  • Passionate about the field.

Develops self-driving technology for trucking

About Waabi

Waabi focuses on developing self-driving technology specifically for the trucking industry. Their main product, the Waabi Driver, is designed to learn from experiences, adapt to new situations, and work with various hardware setups. This technology aims for large-scale use and is intended for integration into vehicles by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). A key feature that sets Waabi apart from competitors is its use of Waabi World, an advanced simulation environment that allows for efficient development of their self-driving systems. This reduces the need for extensive real-world testing, which can be costly and time-consuming, while also improving safety and adaptability. Waabi's goal is to transform the trucking industry by providing technology that lowers operational costs and enhances safety for commercial vehicles. They aim to license their technology to trucking companies and OEMs, making it easier for these businesses to adopt self-driving solutions.
