Sr. Product Designer - Life & Critical Illness Insurance

Position Overview

Join PolicyMe as a Sr. Product Designer on our Life & Critical Illness Insurance product team! We are modernizing the Canadian insurance landscape, making it more accessible, intuitive, and customer-centric. As a remote-first, Toronto-based startup, we are looking for a strategic design partner to shape customer journeys and drive core business outcomes. This role goes beyond UI design, involving problem identification, research, and the creation of elegant, conversion-friendly solutions that balance user empathy with business needs. You will have ownership, autonomy, and a direct impact on how Canadians purchase insurance.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Design Ownership: Manage the entire design process, from exploratory research to wireframes, prototypes, usability testing, and high-fidelity designs.
  • Customer & Product Understanding: Drive deep understanding through short-form research, including customer interviews, edge case mapping, journey reviews, and competitor benchmarking.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to define problems, align on outcomes, and craft thoughtful solutions.
  • Product Initiative Support: Support major product launches and optimize existing customer journey flows through both complete revamps and smaller-scale A/B tests.
  • Design System Contribution: Utilize and contribute to our existing design system to ship consistent, scalable UI and evolve its components and patterns.
  • Team Participation: Engage in team rituals such as weekly design reviews, retrospectives, product unite meetings, and daily cross-functional standups.
  • Communication: Clearly communicate design decisions, articulate the story behind your work, and gain buy-in from all stakeholders, including executive leadership.
  • Iterative Approach: Balance speed and quality by iterating quickly, working with ambiguity, and refining designs based on feedback.
  • Continuous Improvement: Bring a perspective of continuous improvement to our processes, tooling, and team collaboration.

Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience designing intuitive, user-centric digital products, preferably in a fast-paced, consumer-focused environment.
  • Design Foundation: Strong foundation in visual design, interaction design, and information architecture, demonstrated through a portfolio showcasing elegant solutions to complex problems.
  • Product Lifecycle Experience: Proven ability to work through the full product design lifecycle, from research and ideation to execution, validation, and iteration.
  • User Research Skills: Proven ability to conduct or collaborate on user research, synthesize insights, and translate findings into actionable design decisions.
  • Ambiguity Navigation: Comfort in navigating ambiguity and complexity, particularly in simplifying dense or regulated information.
  • Collaboration Skills: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, content strategists, and marketers.
  • Prototyping: Iterative mindset with strong prototyping skills; comfortable sketching, wireframing, and building interactive flows.
  • Design Systems: Familiarity with design systems and experience contributing to scalable components and patterns.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate thinking, frame trade-offs, and align stakeholders.
  • Personal Attributes: A healthy balance of humility, curiosity, and confidence.
