Technical Certificate from an accredited Surgical Technician program
Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
Preferred: Certified Surgical Tech (CST) from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) upon hire
Preferred: 1-3 years previous experience as a Surgical Technician

Responsibilities

Prepare the Operating Room for surgical procedures, including organizing equipment and instruments, setting up for emergency cases, and assuring proper equipment
Assist the surgeon as first or second scrub person during procedures, maintaining a sterile field and efficiency with instruments
Verify specimens with surgeons and nurses
Assist the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges
Achieve and maintain working knowledge of OR machinery and equipment (e.g., lasers, scope equipment, electric and nitrogen motors)
Receive and verify correct implants for surgical procedures (e.g., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft)
Assist with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students
Assist in transporting patients to the O.R. when necessary
Perform decontamination, assembly, and sterilization according to Infection Control and QA guidelines
Operate sterilization equipment (e.g., steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, automated cart washer) per manufacturer directions and safety standards
Utilize desktop/laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly, and tracking
Assist physician and nursing staff in Operating Room and Clinic with procedures and patient care as needed
