Summary: Virtua Health is seeking a remote professional to code and abstract hospital medical records for diagnostic and procedural coding. This role involves utilizing federal and state guidelines to ensure coding accuracy and meet productivity standards. The position requires collaboration with medical staff and clinical documentation improvement (CDI) staff for documentation clarification and maintaining performance in accordance with corporate compliance requirements for coding, abstracting, and Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) assignment.

Requirements

  • Coding Knowledge: Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, and encoder usage.
  • Guideline Adherence: Knowledge of American Hospital Association (AHA), American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS) guidelines, and hospital-specific rules/conventions.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of written federal and state regulations and guidelines for abstract data elements.
  • DRG Knowledge: Ongoing knowledge of DRGs to validate assignments.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to utilize computer systems and equipment appropriately for efficient coding and abstracting.
  • Downtime Procedures: Familiarity with established downtime procedures.
  • Geographic Eligibility: Candidates must reside in AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, ID, KY, MD, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NY, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately review medical records and code all significant diagnoses and procedures for Inpatient, Observation, Outpatient Surgery, Invasive Outpatients, and Emergency Department records.
  • Sequence principal (or first-listed) diagnosis and principal procedures according to documentation and UHDDS definitions.
  • Validate DRG assignments using ongoing knowledge and reference materials.
  • Accurately abstract required data into the computer system according to procedure, ensuring uniformity of the database.
  • Utilize established downtime procedures as needed.
  • Participate in maintaining DNB and accounts receivable goals.
  • Maintain department-level competencies.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with medical staff and CDI staff to clarify documentation.
