Requirements

Candidates must possess a Peer Support Specialist Certification by the State of Louisiana Office of Behavioral Health or be willing to obtain it within 90 days of employment, requiring lived experience and meeting specific time in recovery requirements. They must have lived experience with a behavioral health diagnosis, including mental health challenges, addiction challenges, or co-occurring disorders, and possess knowledge of community resources. A minimum of twelve (12) months of continuous demonstrated recovery, as defined by SAMHSA, is mandatory. Additionally, candidates must reside in Louisiana, and experience working with the LA Medicaid Population is preferred.

Responsibilities

Peer Support Specialists will provide mentoring, guidance, and support services to individuals experiencing behavioral health challenges, working in conjunction with clinical treatment providers. Responsibilities include identifying goals, assisting with treatment planning, providing life skills coaching, making resource referrals, conducting recovery groups, and assisting with discharge planning. They will support individuals in their recovery process by developing formal and informal supports, instilling confidence, assisting in goal development, serving as an advocate, mentor, or facilitator, and helping peers build self-efficacy through role modeling and mastery of experiences.
