Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process, and vascular access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to monitor patients, evaluate responses, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Knowledge of machine safety checks, hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup
  • Ability to prepare laboratory specimens, manage supplies/equipment, and support self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and staff training

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures, disease process, and access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals)
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and monitor patient responses
  • Perform vital signs before reinfusion, ensure safe discontinuation, obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patients before discharge and record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and interventions accurately on treatment sheets
  • Document patient treatment information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, and report unusual findings
  • Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies and equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
