Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Accurate documentation skills for treatment sheets, progress notes, vital signs, and parameters
  • Observational skills for patient and machine safety checks
  • Ability to handle laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply management
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Support for training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access for patency
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Monitor patient response to dialysis, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient, obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations, weights, vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment information, complete Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN or supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, and report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
