Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Capability to calculate and enter dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensuring safety alarms are enabled (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
  • Ability to perform interventions for intradialytic problems and unusual patient status
  • Monitoring arterial/venous pressures and providing interventions
  • Obtaining laboratory testing and preparing specimens
  • Cleaning blood spills with appropriate disinfectant
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitoring patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assisting in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems per physician orders
  • Monitor patient response to dialysis
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion and perform discontinuation functions
  • Discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Perform/record pre/post dialysis evaluations, weight, vital signs with initial identification
  • Calculate/enter UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling
  • Ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Record vital signs and parameters on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Document patient treatment information completely
  • Report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings
  • Document interventions and patient responses
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment and report issues
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately
  • Prepare/organize supplies efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training staff on programs
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment
  • Support QEP, CQI, patient satisfaction, and process improvements
