Requirements

Candidates should have experience leading engineering teams to deliver significant business impact and guide their career development in a high-growth environment. They must possess low ego, an appetite to build, and good judgment in making trade-offs with limited resources. Experience recruiting, mentoring, retaining, and measuring high-performing teams is essential. The role requires operating as a technical leader with hands-on experience in large distributed systems and complex user interfaces across web and mobile. Candidates should have great taste in building user experiences and the systems behind them, understand how form follows function, and effectively direct teams to build in this manner. Comfort with technical debt and how to leverage it, along with an understanding of how to instrument product metrics, is necessary. Effective stakeholder management, handling competing priorities, and dealing with ambiguity are also key requirements. Substantial hands-on experience in the job being managed is expected.

Responsibilities

The Engineering Manager will help shape strategy, drive execution, and partner closely with product and design to solve complex, high-leverage problems for the Seller Scaling team. This role involves guiding the team to build tools and experiences that empower top GMV-generating sellers to grow and scale their businesses. The manager will need to clearly articulate what needs to be built, potentially stepping into a PM mindset when needed, and ensure the team has the skills and direction to shape and deliver the right solutions. They will also be responsible for managing technical debt and leveraging product metrics to inform decisions. All team members are expected to develop a deep understanding of the product and use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller.
