Minimum of seven years of experience as a practicing attorney
At least 10 years of experience performing legal work related to risk management, safety, insurance, claims, litigation, investigations, and related matters
Experience working in a large, multi-state corporate or legal environment, or as in-house counsel
Excellent judgment, high integrity, and strong collaboration skills
Knowledge of federal, state, and local statutes and regulations applicable to publicly-traded organizations
Outstanding written and oral communication skills, as well as organizational and time management skills
Proven track record demonstrating the ability to independently make decisions regarding complex legal and corporate issues, including strong ability to analyze case law and provide recommendations to business partners
Willingness to travel overnight (hybrid role: 4 days per week onsite in Phoenix, AZ; 1 day remote; not eligible for fully remote)
Responsibilities
Provide legal and professional support to the organization related to risk management, safety, and related insurance matters
Partner with Risk Department and provide legal support related to incident investigation, insurance, loss/exposure, policies and procedures, training, and other matters
Manage claims and litigation relating to alleged bodily injury, property damage, negligence, and nuisance; provide support related to indemnity and insurance coverage, including working with third-party claims administrator and claims adjusters
Partner with Safety Department and provide legal support related to safety initiatives, citations, investigations, policies and procedures, training, OSHA and state agency inquiries, and other matters
Provide advice and counsel regarding the Company’s drug and alcohol testing program, including DOT requirements
Mitigate risk and provide strategic recommendations and advice relating to regulatory changes and support of companywide compliance programs
Provide litigation support, including selecting and managing outside counsel and internal staff; communicating key case updates internally and supporting external communications; preparing legal budgets and recommended reserves; supporting the selection, preparation, disclosures, deposition, and defense of Company and expert witnesses; and participating in select depositions, mediations, hearings, and trials of significance
Advise on insurance coverage, joint defense, indemnity, and hold harmless agreements
Provide training to management and corporate and field personnel
Draft and contribute to reports to the organization’s Chief Legal Officer, senior management, auditors, and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors
