Social Media Specialist

Position Overview

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Social Media Specialist to elevate the voices and stories of the Wikimedia projects and community through digital communications. This is a highly collaborative role focused on shaping and executing digital strategies to connect our brands with global audiences. You will manage the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia social media channels, develop inspiring and engaging digital content, and serve as one of the public voices of the Foundation online.

Responsibilities

  • Digital Communications Strategy: Shape and execute digital communications strategies.
    • Advise and advance the strategy for the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikipedia social media channels.
    • Serve as the primary creator of daily and campaign-specific content.
    • Oversee a social media content calendar, scheduling posts about key news, events, announcements, campaigns, and interesting facts.
    • Collaborate with department colleagues to develop digital campaigns that increase global awareness of Wikimedia projects and our social good mission.
  • Channel Management & Engagement:
    • Regularly monitor and maintain social media channels, including moderating comments and messages.
    • Alert staff to notable situations and share relevant content.
    • Engage with followers across digital channels.
    • Proactively identify strategic opportunities to connect the Foundation and Wikipedia to timely global events and relevant causes.
  • Community & Staff Support:
    • Support the development of staff as online thought leaders by advancing their understanding of social platforms and identifying key moments for staff contributions.
    • Create training presentations, materials, toolkits, and guides for Wikimedia community groups and members to strengthen their social media brands and practices.
  • Reporting & Analysis:
    • Regularly organize and share metrics, data, and research reports to glean insights and inform strategy.
  • Paid Promotions & Crisis Management:
    • Work with marketing teams to support strategies for paid social media promotions.
    • Assist with rapid response and crisis management to protect brand reputation and help teams understand relevant social media discussions.
  • Agency Management:
    • Manage the ongoing relationship with the social media agency that assists in executing day-to-day tasks.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of five years of digital communications experience, with an emphasis on social media copywriting, content creation, and account maintenance.
  • Experience with, passion for, and knowledge of social media and other digital communications platforms, audiences, and trends.
