Position Overview

Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG) is seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our Accident & Health department, specializing in Accident products. This role is responsible for developing, analyzing, reviewing, and evaluating new Accident business generated by our Sales team in the Trucking, Education, and Participant Accident markets. The Senior Underwriter will also manage renewal underwriting, oversee referrals, and provide guidance to Program Managers and MGUs.


Essential Functions

Renewal Underwriting

  • Underwrite renewals across multiple products, with a primary focus on Trucking Occupational Accident, K–12 Education, ICS, and international student health.
  • Monitor the experience of assigned business blocks and quote rate and benefit adjustments as needed.
  • Coordinate with Compliance, Account Managers, and Sales to meet turnaround times (TATs).
  • Coordinate with Actuarial when benefit adjustment support is required.
  • Complete rate sheets (detailed premium breakdowns by coverage) for policy setup in the PALIG system of record and process bind requests.
  • Support Actuarial with experience studies, block analysis, and rate development.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Sales and Account Managers.
  • Ensure compliance with reinsurance agreements and refer cases/policies to reinsurers as appropriate.

New Business Underwriting

  • Lead quoting efforts for Accident business in collaboration with Sales (e.g., design and quote solutions for groups, clients, or producers).
  • Review submissions to assess risk, determine coverage levels, and establish pricing.
  • Handle internal referrals from underwriters with lower authority levels.
  • Use Excel-based tools or manual methods (e.g., rate filings) to develop premium rates.
  • Meet TATs for quote activity and, when requested, participate in meetings with brokers and clients.
  • Coordinate with Compliance, Actuarial, and Sales on complex or non-standard cases.
  • Ensure reinsurance requirements are met and refer policies accordingly.

New and Existing MGUs

  • Evaluate and manage underwriting referrals from assigned Accident Program Managers and MGUs.
  • Provide oversight and collaborate with other Underwriters for MGUs handling Accident and multi-product portfolios.
  • Participate in due diligence evaluations for potential new Program Managers and MGUs.
  • Support the evaluation and launch of new programs.
  • Conduct desk and on-site audits of delegated underwriting authority under the Accident & Health Audit team.

Strategic Projects & Portfolio Management

  • Manage portfolio to ensure short- and medium-term bottom-line targets are achieved.
  • Lead small to mid-sized projects (e.g., evaluating vendors for potential portfolio additions, developing a sales guide on Gig risk appetite, designing a peer review audit template).
  • Support U.S. Benefits and Special Markets lines (e.g., Gap, Fixed Indemnity, Rx Indemnity, Medical Accident, Minimum Essential Coverage [MEC], Dental, Vision, Critical Illness).

KPI Monitoring & Ad Hoc

  • Monitor key performance indicators and recommend corrective actions.
  • Participate in cross-training and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 to 5 years of group underwriting experience in Medical, Accident, and/or Supplemental Benefits.
  • In lieu of a degree: 4 additional years of experience and at least 1 year in program business (carrier or MGU side).

Preferred:

  • 15+ years of group underwriting experience across two or more segments (Medical, Accident, Supplemental Benefits).
  • Individual underwriting experience.
  • At least 3 years in program business (carrier or MGU side).
  • JD or certifications such as LOMA’s FLMI.
