Senior Counsel, Product Legal

Position Overview

Twilio is seeking a Senior Counsel to join the Product Legal Team. This role will provide essential legal support to Twilio's Research & Development (R&D) Organization, acting as a trusted member of the legal team and a key business partner. You will collaborate closely with global Product and Engineering teams, offering legal guidance throughout the product lifecycle to ensure strategic objectives are met while complying with applicable laws and regulations in a business-centric manner.

About the Job

As a Senior Counsel on the Product Legal Team, you will be instrumental in guiding Twilio's product development and services. You will work in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with various business stakeholders and legal colleagues to achieve Twilio's strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Product Development Support: Advise Product and Engineering teams at all stages of product development, navigating potential legal risks.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Work with Product and Engineering teams to ensure products and services comply with existing applicable regulations.
  • Go-to-Market Strategy: Advise Product and Engineering teams on go-to-market strategies for new products, including structuring and drafting necessary legal terms.
  • Commercial Transactions: Support the commercial transactions legal team in reviewing and negotiating legal agreements with customers, vendors, and business partners.
  • Privacy and Data Protection: Support the Privacy team in identifying privacy risks and conducting data protection and/or Privacy Impact Assessments.
  • Marketing Review: Review marketing materials related to Twilio's product and service offerings.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Collaborate with legal colleagues to monitor and analyze regulatory developments impacting products and services, providing necessary advice to internal teams.
  • AI Governance: Assist with governance related to the development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) features and AI model development, ensuring responsible use, compliance with AI regulations, and alignment with industry best practices.
  • Process Development: Help develop and maintain legal processes and documentation to support the Product Legal Team function.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong academic credentials and a proven track record as a lawyer.
  • Membership in a local State Bar or eligibility to register as Registered In-House Counsel.
  • 8+ years of legal experience, with at least three years in-house at a technology company.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team.
  • Proven experience counseling product and/or engineering teams on issues, including compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • A quick learner with a strong sense of initiative.
  • Experience negotiating customer contracts in a technology company.
  • Familiarity with global privacy frameworks.
