The Principal Interoperability Engineer will serve as the Interoperability Subject Matter Expert (SME), contributing to the strategic vision and leading the design, technical execution, and delivery of healthcare interoperability initiatives. This pivotal role focuses on enabling secure, standards-based data exchange across EHRs, health information networks, payers, and third-party systems.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Collaborate with marketing and commercial teams to contribute to and drive the healthcare interoperability roadmap aligned with organizational goals.
• Collaborate with clinical, product, and engineering teams to identify and prioritize integration opportunities.
• Represent the organization in industry groups and standards bodies (e.g., HL7, iCode, Argonaut, IHE) as needed.

Architecture & Design

• Design scalable, secure, and standards-compliant interoperability frameworks.
• Develop and enforce architectural best practices for clinical and administrative data exchange.
• Facilitate and lead detailed HL7 v2, HL7 CCD/CDA, and FHIR interface mapping for use case scenarios.
• Author technical specifications.

Technical Execution

• Lead the development and deployment of APIs, data pipelines, and integration services for real-time and batch data exchange.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, 21st Century Cures Act, and other healthcare data privacy and security regulations.
• Provide hands-on support for complex integration challenges and guide teams through technical decision-making.

People Management

• Lead and mentor a team of engineers focused on interoperability and integration.
• Provide regular coaching, performance feedback, and career development support.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture.
• Manage team capacity, hiring, and resource planning in alignment with project goals.

Collaboration & Enablement

• Partner with EHR vendors, health systems, payers, and third-party developers to ensure seamless data interoperability.
• Support internal teams with technical documentation, training, and onboarding for interoperability tools.
• Monitor and optimize system performance, reliability, and data quality across integrations.

Critical Success Indicators

• Successfully built and commercialized multiple EHR Interoperability solutions and services from concept through launch using agile processes in both consumer tech and med tech.
• Successfully defined a scalable and extensible technical strategy with clear delineation between internal and external contributions.
