Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), and enabling safety alarms like Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160
  • Ability to obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluations
  • Capability to monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Proficiency in documenting on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and reporting changes to RN/supervisor
  • Knowledge of hemostasis, dressings, blood spill cleanup, and lab specimen preparation
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Ability to maintain safe and clean working environment and conduct machine safety checks

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, and UF modeling
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information, including Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status or machine issues
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, including pressures, and intervene as needed
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately with disinfectant
  • Prepare, organize, and utilize supplies/equipment efficiently to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Support QEP, CQI activities, and process improvements for patient quality goals
  • Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
