Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • In accordance with organization policies, procedures, training, and compliance with corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient-specific education on adequacy measures (e.g., Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access)
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Competence in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ability to enable safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits (NVL) 160) and perform machine safety checks
  • Proficiency in accurate and timely documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct interventions for intradialytic problems or unusual status, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Skills in obtaining laboratory testing, preparing specimens, cleaning blood spills, and managing supplies/equipment
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvement

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and administer heparin as delegated
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic problems, and intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (e.g., standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge and record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform/document machine safety checks
  • Record vital signs and treatment parameters accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Document all treatment-related information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and document/report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies efficiently
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
