Requirements

  • Complete understanding of all ZRL Microbiology processes including safety practices, quality control, and testing procedures from set-up to reporting through the laboratory information system, including antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST)
  • Highly skilled in microbiology with expertise in culture/PCR results interpretation, laboratory information system (LIS) utilization for accessioning, requisition maintenance, test ordering, and batch reporting
  • Ability to perform and oversee all antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) procedures and platforms, including troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of Select Agent Safety Protocols, identification, and reporting requirements
  • Strong leadership abilities, including mentoring/training junior team members, delegating tasks, handling complex problem-solving, and triaging samples
  • Effective communication skills to engage with Lab Manager, Medical teams, and colleagues; utilize Salesforce for customer service issues
  • Capability to perform literature reviews and stay current on microbiology/molecular topics (e.g., assay development, antimicrobial resistance, CLSI guidelines, emerging diseases, culture techniques)
  • Understanding of EH&S biosafety requirements and ability to ensure team compliance

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a ZRL Veterinary Microbiology subject matter expert, assisting team with difficult culture/PCR cases
  • Perform all reporting of results and manager review in LIS
  • Perform and oversee AST procedures and platforms, troubleshooting as needed
  • Perform and oversee work in accordance with Select Agent Safety Protocols, identification, and reporting
  • Engage with Medical colleagues to resolve customer service issues using Salesforce
  • Ensure operation and maintenance of all microbiology/molecular instruments and equipment
  • Delegate tasks to maintain smooth workflow in high-volume environment
  • Engage with Medical Leadership to improve processes, eliminate waste, and maintain quality
  • Work with department staff to identify and develop personal/professional growth opportunities
  • Establish, maintain, and improve relationships with peers, colleagues, medical team, and lab support leaders; collaborate with other supervisors/managers on strategic/operational objectives
  • Develop, enforce systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards; hold team accountable
  • Maintain quality and customer service goals by collaborating with Head of Quality and Customer Service Management; analyze/resolve problems; recommend/implement improvements
  • Drive non-conforming event management investigations, root cause analysis, corrective/preventative actions, and effectiveness checks
  • Monitor testing turnaround times; provide reports and analysis for metrics not meeting expectations
  • Train colleagues, perform advanced quality control, and manage complex reporting/identification (assist/delegate to senior staff)
