Requirements

Candidates must have experience managing engineers and engineering teams focused on infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing tools. A strong technical background in systems engineering, cloud infrastructure (Kubernetes, OpenStack, etc.), and developer platform architecture is required. Proven ability to lead cross-functional collaboration and product-oriented development in open communities or large-scale developer ecosystems is essential, along with excellent communication and facilitation skills, especially in distributed and asynchronous environments. The ability to travel 2-3 times a year is also necessary. Experience managing security-focused engineering teams, contributing to or leading open-source projects, and familiarity with Wikipedia or Wikimedia projects are considered a plus. Candidates must be based in time zones from UTC−5 to UTC+2.

Responsibilities

The Engineering Manager, Security and Privacy will lead a group of security and privacy engineers to protect the Wikimedia Foundation’s people, project integrity, infrastructure, and other assets against threats. They will advise product management on security best practices and the security implications of product decisions. This role involves helping to establish the Foundation’s overall security and safety roadmap and ensuring delivery against its technical and organizational goals. Collaboration with Product & Engineering teams, Legal, ITS, and other departments is expected. The manager will set direction, unblock work, and ensure delivery against technical and organizational goals. They will establish and lead the execution of group processes, including sprint planning, security releases and deployments, and security incident response. Additionally, they will be responsible for hiring and developing a high-performing, inclusive engineering group that builds and owns security-critical software and operates from a shared sense of mission.
