Requirements

  • Theological and clinical training to help patients, families, and staff cope with illness, trauma, death, and loss
  • Ability to assess patient's spiritual practices/values and integrate them into the medical plan of care
  • Proficient in planning, facilitating, coordinating, and delivering pastoral and spiritual care, including leadership of spirituality groups, ecumenical devotional services, family conferences, and public prayers
  • Ability to serve as liaison to Catholic Chaplains, community clergy, and act as public relations advocate within policies
  • Proficient in documentation in electronic records regarding spiritual needs, adhering to confidentiality and regulatory guidelines
  • Ability to work PRN (as needed), day shift hours in Yankton

Responsibilities

  • Minister to spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, residents, and staff, maintaining Christian, patient-centered care
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team, communicating spiritual assessments and pertinent information
  • Work with patients/families to understand medical treatment implications in the context of spiritual beliefs, address difficult issues, and support the team
  • Consult and debrief with departments, groups, and staff after unexpected or unsettling events
  • Plan, facilitate, coordinate, and deliver pastoral/spiritual care via consultations, referrals, patient/family requests, or rounding
  • Explore beliefs and meaning in illness/crisis with patients/families, respecting their goals and choices
  • Gather and evaluate data for bio-psycho-social-spiritual/religious assessments and reassessments to aid plan of care
  • Assist patients/families/staff in crises, bereavement, end-of-life decisions, and distress
  • Provide encouragement and support during illness, empowering spiritual/religious strengths for healing
