Requirements

Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor degree and be admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. state, with experience advising online platforms, particularly in the areas of privacy and security. Strong management experience leading teams of lawyers and legal professionals is required, along with a track record of enabling successful cross-departmental collaboration and developing lawyers at all levels. Expertise in advising technical teams and providing guidance on matters relating to privacy and security is essential.

Responsibilities

The Associate General Counsel will advise the Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel, and Senior Leadership team on legal and regulatory matters, especially pertaining to privacy and security. They will collaborate with legal department staff members to define and shape a renewed vision and strategy for the Foundation’s privacy team, setting priorities and evolving the infrastructure to deliver on that vision. The role involves managing a team providing transactional and product counseling support for engineers/technologists, including direct counseling, setting organizational policy, and risk assessment/mitigation. Furthermore, the Associate General Counsel will oversee an annual refresh of the Wikimedia Foundation Privacy Policy and lead communication campaigns to educate stakeholders on its evolution.
