Requirements

Technical Certificate: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program
Preferred: Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) upon hire
Preferred: 1-3 years previous experience as a Surgical Technician
Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
Ability to work Monday-Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm; 80hrs/2wks

Responsibilities

Prepare the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion, including organizing equipment and instruments, setting up for emergency cases, and assuring proper equipment
Assist the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile field at all times
Maintain efficiency in handling surgical instruments at physician’s request
Verify specimens with surgeons and nurses
Assist the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges involved in the surgical procedure
Achieve and maintain working knowledge of all OR machinery and equipment used on the sterile field (e.g., lasers, scope equipment, electric and nitrogen motors)
Receive and verify correct implants for all surgical procedures (e.g., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft)
Assist with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students
Assist in transporting patients to the O.R. when necessary
Perform decontamination, assembly, and sterilization according to Infection Control and QA monitoring guidelines
Operate sterilization equipment (e.g., steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, automated cart washer) per manufacturer directions and safety standards
Utilize desktop/laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly, and tracking functions
Assist the physician and nursing staff both in the Operating Room and Clinic with procedures and patient care as needed
