Requirements

  • Technical Certificate completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program
  • Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds
  • Preferred: Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) upon hire
  • Preferred: Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Technician

Responsibilities

  • Responds and assists professional nursing staff and Physicians during pre-procedure, procedure, and post-procedure periods
  • Assists with procedure room set-up, equipment cleaning and maintenance, pre- and post-procedure assistance as directed by the Registered Nurse
  • Enters and maintains inventory control and clerical duties for the department
  • Prepares the Operating Room for surgical procedures, including organizing equipment and instruments, setting up for emergency cases, and assuring proper equipment
  • Assists the surgeon as first or second scrub person during procedures, maintains sterile field, handles instruments efficiently, and verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses
  • Assists circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges
  • Achieves and maintains working knowledge of OR machinery and equipment on the sterile field (e.g., lasers, scope equipment, motors)
  • Receives and verifies correct implants for surgical procedures (e.g., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft)
  • Assists with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students
  • Assists in transporting patients to the O.R. when necessary
  • Performs decontamination, assembly, and sterilization according to Infection Control and QA guidelines
  • Operates sterilization equipment (e.g., steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, automated cart washer) per manufacturer directions and safety standards
  • Utilizes desktop/laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly, and tracking
