Requirements

Technical Certificate completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program
Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (Preferred)
Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Technician (Preferred)
Visual acuity adequate to perform position duties
Ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds
Ability to work rotating days/evenings/nights/weekends/holidays (PRN, part-time)

Responsibilities

Prepares the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion, including organizing equipment and instruments, setting up for emergency cases, and assuring proper equipment
Assists the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile field and efficiency in handling instruments
Verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses
Assists the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges
Achieves and maintains working knowledge of all OR machinery and equipment used on the sterile field (e.g., lasers, scope equipment, electric and nitrogen motors)
Receives and verifies correct implants for surgical procedures (e.g., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft)
Assists with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students
Assists in transporting patients to the O.R. when necessary
Performs decontamination, assembly, and sterilization according to Infection Control and QA guidelines
Operates sterilization equipment (e.g., steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, automated cart washer) per manufacturer directions and safety standards
Utilizes desktop/laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly, and tracking
Responds and assists nursing staff and Physicians during pre-procedure, procedure, and post-procedure periods, including room set-up, equipment cleaning/maintenance, inventory control, and clerical duties
