Candidates should possess 7+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin, along with an extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems utilizing technologies such as AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. They should also have experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through the definition of technical and execution plans, and write high-quality, easily understandable code. Furthermore, candidates should thrive in ambiguity and be comfortable moving from low-level language idioms to the architecture of large systems, demonstrating mastery in gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers. Experience in the card network landscape, specifically building and launching card products or adjacent payments technologies, is also required.
As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, you will be responsible for setting technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale and collaborating with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are well understood and managed. You will act as a force-multiplier for your team by defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes, taking ownership of the team’s operations and availability through monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting. You will foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, advocating for them beyond your team, and helping develop talent on your team through feedback and guidance. You will also contribute to the development of talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.
