The Virtual Cards (VCN) Platform Engineering team at Affirm is responsible for powering Affirm's products that utilize one-time-use cards. These cards enable consumers to leverage Affirm’s financial products at various merchants, including online, in-store, and digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. The team is critical in enabling Affirm’s network scale by bridging Affirm and external credit networks like Visa.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long timescale.
  • Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs are well understood and managed throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Act as a force-multiplier for the team through defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes.
  • Take ownership of the team’s operations and availability by establishing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting to support “keep the lights on” and on-call efforts.
  • Foster a culture of quality and ownership on the team by setting code review and design standards and advocating for them beyond the team.
  • Help develop talent on the team through feedback and guidance, and by leading by example.

Requirements

  • Experience: 7+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale.
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in languages like Python or Kotlin.
  • Distributed Systems: Extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
  • Feature Delivery: Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through the definition of a technical and execution plan.
  • Code Quality: Ability to write high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
  • Ambiguity: Comfort navigating ambiguity and moving from low-level language idioms to system architecture to understand how systems work.
  • Feedback Integration: Demonstrated growth and impact trajectory showcasing mastery in gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with the global engineering team.
  • Card Network Experience: Experience in the card network landscape, building and launching card products or adjacent payments technologies.
