This role focuses on securing and retaining business for PPD through professional, consultative, and proactive sales activities. The primary goal is to position PPD as a preferred provider for clinical development work by engaging with decision-makers and influencers at existing and new clinical sponsors. Key responsibilities include qualifying deals, developing proposals with recommended pricing structures, and acting as the primary contact until work is sold, ensuring a smooth transition to the clinical development teams. This position also serves as a liaison between the sponsor and PPD for all business development activities and requirements, and involves gathering data on marketing trends, competitive products, services, and pricing.

Essential Functions

  • Orchestrates RFP strategy calls, develops client proposals, prepares client presentations, and negotiates and closes contracts.
  • Signs new business authorizations at or above the assigned authorization goal.
  • Makes cold calls and client visits, maintains a sales database, and keeps records of cold call and client visit activity.
  • Ensures client satisfaction through periodic client contact, reporting, and developing recommendations to address any dissatisfaction.
  • Responds to all client requests.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic/vocational qualification.
  • Experience: Previous experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 2+ years), or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Scientific, sales, and/or marketing background with a concentration in the pharmaceutical/biotech area.
    • Proven track record of developing mid- and high-level business contacts.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills for managing and integrating with Operations, Finance, and Marketing, and for expanding relationships and business opportunities.
    • Demonstrated experience in identifying and developing sales leads, making professional presentations, managing the sales process through close, and handling contract negotiations.
    • Understanding of sales automation systems and Microsoft Office programs.

Working Conditions and Environment

  • Work is performed in an office environment with exposure to electrical office equipment.
  • Occasional drives to site locations.
  • Occasional travel, both domestic and international.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Frequently stationary for 6-8 hours per day.
  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
  • Frequent mobility required.
  • Occasional crouching, stooping, bending, and twisting of the upper body and neck.
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying (or otherwise moves) objects including luggage and laptop computer with a maximum lift of 15-20 lbs.
  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively, both verbally and through listening.
  • Frequently interacts with others to obtain or relate information to diverse groups.
  • Works independently with little guidance, relying on own initiative to plan work schedules to meet goals.
  • Requires multiple periods of intense concentration.
  • Performs a wide range of variable tasks as dictated by variable demands.
