Requirements

  • Former engineer who has built impressive products
  • Experience building teams of great engineers
  • Experience scaling engineering teams thoughtfully
  • Ability to manage 3-5 engineers initially and hire 3-5 more across multiple teams and specializations (e.g., Product Engineers, Site Reliability Engineers, Design Engineers)
  • Strong engineering skills to jump into systems, code to debug issues, ship bug fixes, or improve developer experience while keeping skills up-to-date (off critical path)
  • Alignment with unique engineering culture: optimistic about engineers, supports engineers writing product specs, making product decisions, and avoiding ticket-based breakdowns

Responsibilities

  • Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers cut scope or improve quality; influence and coach individual contributors (ICs) without making final decisions
  • Grow engineers to handle large, loosely defined projects with minimal intervention
  • Propose and lead department and company-wide initiatives, such as:
  • Rethinking pull request reviews (align on goals, sample PRs, propose changes for speed and quality)
  • Designing and improving interviews based on candidate and team feedback
  • Improving data generation and simulation in demo accounts
  • Work closely with VP of Engineering, Colin, and peers to build out the team and scale the unique culture
  • Perform grassroots leadership by managing a small team covering multiple specializations
