Requirements

  • 5+ years' experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications with success at the USPTO, including detailed knowledge of USPTO procedures
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in biochemistry, chemistry, or related fields, with proven ability to comprehend, draft, and prosecute patent applications in these subject areas
  • Experience in biochemistry, chemistry, or molecular biology labs
  • Ability to keep current on life sciences techniques, with knowledge of bioinformatics and AI valuable
  • Proven ability to perform complex IP analyses, including product clearances, technology landscapes, and prior art searches
  • Familiarity with patent searching databases and AI search tools desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to deliver engaging IP training to R&D and business colleagues
  • Business insight and ability to learn and understand significant business drivers
  • Demonstrated abilities to manage outside counsel, work efficiently, control costs, and exercise sound business and legal judgment
  • Self-motivated, driven to succeed, with high level of initiative and ability to work autonomously

Responsibilities

  • Assist LS businesses in patent portfolio development, focusing on biochemistry, chemistry, and molecular biology technologies
  • Develop patent portfolio strategies, aligning technology and business strategy
  • Work closely with in-house and outside patent counsel, patent paralegals, and USPTO patent examiners to prepare and prosecute high-quality, commercially relevant patent applications
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate searches to counsel R&D and business colleagues
  • Review publications and marketing materials as part of the Company’s Promotional Review process
  • Engage in trade secret sensing and auditing activities
