Requirements
Candidates should have 12+ years of experience in delivering scalable software solutions and a proven track record of leading the delivery of large-scale, highly available, low latency, high quality systems. Deep hands-on technical expertise in hyper-scale distributed systems engineering is required, with a multi-cluster/multi-tenant Kubernetes, Language Runtimes/VMs (JVM, WASM, CPython, etc.), and Container & Virtualization/Hypervisor technologies (firecracker/gVisor/cloud-hypervisor/kata-containers) being a big plus. Experience in large-scale safe deployment technologies, Cloud Native technologies including networking & security, and driving operational excellence for large, production services is also necessary. A track record of providing technical leadership and mentorship, and collaborating across teams and roles, including product management, UX, and other engineering teams, is essential.
Responsibilities
The Principal Engineer will drive the overall technical charter for the new Compute Platform, including cloud infrastructure, big data systems, and security. They will work closely with product management and engineering management to build and drive the roadmap for Confluent’s Compute Platform, enabling new business opportunities. This role involves delivering high impact by driving important technical initiatives in security, reliability, multi-tenancy, architectural direction, and major component refactoring across organizational boundaries. The engineer will act as a strong technical leader and representative for engineering across the Compute organization, leading the team and product on aspects of product definition, architectural design, and delivery. They will also focus on key operational aspects such as availability, reliability, performance, monitoring, emergency response, capacity planning, and disaster recovery to ensure a highly-available, resilient, and secure offering.
