Ashby is seeking a curious, rigorous, and problem-hungry Platform Engineer who also codes. The goal is to build a "paved road" for excellent engineering teams to operate efficiently and reliably. Ashby provides software that enables talent teams to create effective, delightful, and respectful hiring processes. The company boasts notable customers such as Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake, with strong growth metrics, tens of millions in ARR (growing >100% year over year), over 2500 customers, low churn, and significant runway. This role is listed as both Platform Engineer and Site Reliability Engineer, as the team handles both functions, and candidates leaning towards either discipline are welcome.

About the Role and How We Work

Elénie, a Director of Engineering at Ashby, highlights the critical importance of infrastructure work, drawing from her background in SRE and building "real infrastructure." She emphasizes how often unseen infrastructure work directly impacts customer experience, from fast-loading admin UIs to data recoverability and safety. Her passion for infrastructure stems from a desire to create fully-automated solutions for reliability issues, using software to ensure safety in infrastructure updates, inter-team schema changes, and data access. She believes in training that meets individuals where they are and values empathy as a core skill for infrastructure engineers.

At Ashby, Platform Engineers own their projects and ship with minimal oversight. The SRE approach is practical, prioritizing common sense over roadblocks for security and avoiding rigid processes like change management boards based on the lowest common denominator. This comes with significant responsibility, as the company handles personal and confidential data. As Ashby grows, the need for reliability, security, and evolving internal operations becomes paramount.

The company is at a critical inflection point where its ability to scale and deliver a seamless experience is crucial, supporting fast-growing companies that hire hundreds of people monthly. Ashby needs a skilled individual to make sound decisions, debug complex issues, and build a future-proof platform. The existing small but effective infrastructure team has established a secure and simple environment, avoiding unnecessary service creation, to support the growing product team. The new Platform Engineer will also own projects end-to-end, impacting core aspects of the Ashby developer and user experience. Potential projects include:

  • Optimizing Ashby's homegrown ultra-dynamic recruiting DSL-to-SQL compiler and creating tools to assist developers.
  • Developing automated guardrails for the security and privacy of customer data.
  • Assisting developers in shipping features quickly through canary deployments.

Requirements

  • Coding proficiency
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Interest in building reliable and scalable infrastructure
  • Experience or strong interest in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles
  • Ability to make good decisions and debug complex issues
  • Experience with or willingness to work on infrastructure projects end-to-end

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a scalable and reliable platform
  • Ensure the security and privacy of customer data
  • Support product engineers in shipping features efficiently
  • Optimize existing systems, such as the DSL-to-SQL compiler
  • Develop automated solutions for reliability and security
  • Contribute to the evolution of internal operational practices
