Staff Engineer, Distributed Systems
LaunchDarklyFull Time
Senior (5 to 8 years)
Candidates must possess extensive experience in designing, developing, migrating, scaling, and operating large distributed systems within a SaaS environment. A proven track record of leading transformations from monolithic to distributed architectures, including Postgres sharding or other database partitioning strategies, is essential. Hands-on programming experience in Ruby and/or Go, along with expertise in service communication and observability at scale (e.g., service mesh/Istio, Kafka, tracing/metrics), is required. Principal-level technical leadership, including the ability to set strategy, influence across organizations, and mentor principal and senior engineers, is crucial. A balance of infrastructure depth and application architecture awareness, with a skill for making system-level tradeoffs that prioritize reliability and customer experience, is necessary. Excellent communication skills for explaining complex systems to both technical and non-technical audiences are also required.
The Principal Software Engineer will lead the architecture and design for Cells, Organizations, and OrgMover, enabling Postgres sharding, zero-downtime migrations, and global SaaS scalability and regionality. They will solve complex distributed systems challenges such as tenant isolation, regional distribution, multi-region replication, observability, fault tolerance, and migrations. This role involves partnering across infrastructure, product, and executive teams to align SaaS evolution with technical excellence and business needs, and translating architectural tradeoffs into clear direction for engineering managers, senior engineers, and executives. Additionally, the engineer will mentor and elevate engineers across teams, raising the bar for technical leadership and inclusive collaboration, and provide thought leadership on SaaS scaling, distributed systems, and platform reliability.
