Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in operating hemodialysis machines, including setup, programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Ability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide interventions as prescribed
  • Proficiency in obtaining vital signs, weights, hemostasis, dressings, and pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills for Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes, and treatment parameters
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Capability to obtain laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD)
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and document
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet
  • Report significant patient changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Perform machine safety checks and document interventions for unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, including pressures, and provide interventions
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies to prevent wastage
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on applicable programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
