Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM), disease process/access, vascular access evaluation, cannulation, heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160)
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluation, initiating/discontinuing dialysis treatments, monitoring intradialytic problems, hemostasis, and applying dressings
  • Capability to perform and document pre/post dialysis evaluations, calculate/enter machine parameters, record treatment data accurately and timely
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, intervene for unusual status, monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Competence in laboratory testing specimen preparation, cleaning blood spills, supply/equipment management to prevent wastage
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access patency, cannulate access, administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment per procedures, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations, weights, vital signs
  • Calculate/enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling), ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes with initial identification
  • Report significant patient changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/document/report issues
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests, prepare specimens, clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment, support QEP/CQI activities
