Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including blood flow (QB), dialysate flow (QD), ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM)
Ability to perform vital signs measurement, weights, pre/post dialysis evaluations, hemostasis, and dressings
Proficiency in documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Capability to monitor patients, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed, and report changes to RN/supervisor
Skills in machine safety checks, blood spill cleanup, laboratory specimen preparation, and supply/equipment management
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as directed by physician/RN
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and evaluations accurately and timely
Document all treatment-related information and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Monitor vascular access during treatment, provide interventions, and document/report findings
Obtain laboratory testing, prepare specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Actively participate in QEP, CQI, and process improvement activities
