Requirements

Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and disease process/access
Ability to evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing vascular access evaluations
Ability to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
Proficiency in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits NVL 160) and conducting machine safety checks
Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Ability to report changes in patient condition to RN or supervisor
Competence in laboratory testing, specimen preparation, blood spill cleanup, and supply/equipment management
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic problems
Discontinue treatment, obtain hemostasis, apply dressings, and evaluate patient prior to discharge
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Record vital signs, treatment parameters, and ensure accurate documentation
Report significant information or changes to RN/supervisor
Observe patients, perform machine safety checks, and document interventions
Monitor vascular access during treatment and provide interventions as needed
Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
Clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Maintain safe and clean working environment
Support QEP, CQI, and process improvement activities
