Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in evaluating vascular access for patency, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Ability to obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and perform vascular access evaluation
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (QB, QD, UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Competence in evaluating intradialytic problems, intervening per physician orders, and monitoring patient response
  • Skills in performing hemostasis, applying dressings, and evaluating patients prior to discharge
  • Ability to calculate and enter dialysis machine programming, ensure safety alarms (e.g., NVL 160), and document accurately on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Capability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, report changes to RN/supervisor, and document interventions
  • Knowledge of vascular access monitoring (arterial/venous pressures) and laboratory testing/specimen preparation
  • Ability to clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently, and monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Participation in QEP, CQI activities, process improvement, and staff training

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration as allowed
  • Obtain and record pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weight, and evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic issues
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain reinfusion vital signs, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and program dialysis machines (UF goal, time, modeling) and enable safety alarms
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, and patient info accurately with initials
  • Report significant changes or unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and document interventions for patient status
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment, intervene as needed, and report findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab tests and prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy and manage supplies to prevent wastage
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on programs
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
