Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Knowledge of patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Ability to perform vital signs, weight measurements, and pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders
  • Competence in machine programming for UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and safety alarms (e.g., NVL 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Observation and machine safety checks per facility policy
  • Ability to obtain laboratory specimens and handle blood spills with disinfectants
  • Efficient use of supplies and equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitoring self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures and disease/access
  • Welcome patients and inquire about wellbeing
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, and administer heparin as allowed
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor response, and intervene for intradialytic problems
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge
  • Record pre/post evaluations, weight, vital signs with identification
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Document vital signs and parameters accurately and timely on treatment sheet
  • Complete treatment documentation and progress notes; report changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings
  • Document interventions for patient status changes
  • Monitor vascular access during treatment (pressures), intervene, document, report
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens
  • Clean blood spills immediately
  • Prepare/organize supplies efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training staff on programs
  • Maintain safe/clean environment and support QEP/CQI activities
