Requirements

  • Functions under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and state/federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), disease process/access
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, including programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal, treatment time, UF modeling, and enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits - NVL 160)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, weights, and perform pre/post dialysis evaluations
  • Accurate documentation skills (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient and machine safety checks
  • Ability to collect and prepare laboratory specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvement, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access for patency, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre/post treatment vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluation
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders (blood flow QB, dialysate flow QD)
  • Monitor patients during treatment, evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, record pre/post evaluations, weight, vital signs
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis machine programming (UF goal, time, modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled, record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment information, report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, observe patients, document interventions for unusual status
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report unusual findings
  • Obtain prescribed lab testing, prepare specimens
  • Clean blood spills per policy
  • Prepare/organize supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean working environment
  • Support QEP/CQI activities and process improvements for patient quality goals
