Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
Skills in vascular access evaluation, patency checks, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including initiating treatment, monitoring intradialytic problems, vital signs, weights, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and discontinuation
Proficiency in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Ability to perform and document pre- and post-treatment evaluations, vital signs, hemostasis, dressings, and laboratory specimen preparation
Competence in machine safety checks, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment management, and documentation (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
Observation and intervention skills for patient status changes, with reporting to RN/supervisor
Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, intervene as prescribed
Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
Calculate and enter UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling; ensure safety alarms enabled
Document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes
Report significant patient changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
Conduct machine safety checks, intervene/document unusual patient status
Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report issues
Obtain/p repare lab specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
Assist in training direct patient care staff
Maintain safe/clean environment, support QEP/CQI/process improvements
