Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Ability to setup and operate hemodialysis machines
  • Skills in vascular access evaluation, patency checks, cannulation, and heparin administration (as delegated or allowed by state law)
  • Knowledge of dialysis treatment procedures, including initiating treatment, monitoring intradialytic problems, vital signs, weights, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling, safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits 160), and discontinuation
  • Proficiency in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Ability to perform and document pre- and post-treatment evaluations, vital signs, hemostasis, dressings, and laboratory specimen preparation
  • Competence in machine safety checks, blood spill cleanup, supply/equipment management, and documentation (e.g., Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet, progress notes)
  • Observation and intervention skills for patient status changes, with reporting to RN/supervisor
  • Participation in Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, process improvements, and patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Assists in training direct patient care staff

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, evaluate vascular access, cannulate, administer heparin
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders (QB, QD), monitor patient response, evaluate intradialytic issues, intervene as prescribed
  • Obtain vital signs before reinfusion, discontinue treatment, evaluate patient (standing/sitting BP), achieve hemostasis, apply dressings
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge, perform/record pre/post evaluations
  • Calculate and enter UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling; ensure safety alarms enabled
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, interventions on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet/progress notes
  • Report significant patient changes/unusual findings to RN/supervisor
  • Conduct machine safety checks, intervene/document unusual patient status
  • Monitor vascular access (arterial/venous pressures), intervene/report issues
  • Obtain/p repare lab specimens, clean blood spills, manage supplies/equipment efficiently
  • Monitor self-care patients under RN supervision
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff
  • Maintain safe/clean environment, support QEP/CQI/process improvements
