Requirements

  • Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
  • Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
  • Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
  • Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-dialysis evaluations
  • Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Competence in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
  • Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
  • Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN or supervisor
  • Capability to handle intradialytic problems, interventions, hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup
  • Skills in preparing laboratory specimens, supplies, and equipment efficiently
  • Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
  • Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
  • Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic issues as prescribed
  • Discontinue treatment, obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
  • Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
  • Document all treatment-related information, including pre/post evaluations, and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
  • Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and document/report unusual findings
  • Obtain and prepare lab specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
  • Observe patients during self-care under RN supervision and perform/document interventions for unusual status
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
