Requirements

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team under direct supervision of a licensed nurse
Compliance with organization policies, procedures, training, and corporation, state, and federal regulations
Knowledge of dialysis therapy, including setup and operation of hemodialysis machines
Ability to perform vascular access evaluation, cannulation, and heparin administration as delegated or allowed by state law
Skills in obtaining vital signs, weights, and performing pre- and post-dialysis evaluations
Proficiency in initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing dialysis treatments per prescribed orders (e.g., QB, QD, UF goals, treatment time, UF modeling)
Competence in enabling safety alarms (e.g., Narrow Venous Limits at 160)
Accurate documentation on Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes
Ability to observe patients, conduct machine safety checks, and report changes to RN or supervisor
Capability to handle intradialytic problems, interventions, hemostasis, dressings, and blood spill cleanup
Skills in preparing laboratory specimens, supplies, and equipment efficiently
Support for Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), CQI activities, patient satisfaction, and process improvements

Responsibilities

Assist in patient education on adequacy measures (OLC, AMP, UKM) and disease process/access
Welcome patients, inquire about wellbeing, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment
Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and perform vascular access evaluations
Initiate dialysis per orders, monitor patient response, and intervene for intradialytic issues as prescribed
Discontinue treatment, obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion, evaluate patient, achieve hemostasis, and apply dressings
Calculate and enter patient-specific dialysis programming (UF goal, treatment time, UF modeling)
Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs/treatment parameters accurately
Document all treatment-related information, including pre/post evaluations, and report significant changes to RN/supervisor
Monitor arterial/venous pressures, provide interventions, and document/report unusual findings
Obtain and prepare lab specimens, clean blood spills, and manage supplies/equipment to prevent wastage
Observe patients during self-care under RN supervision and perform/document interventions for unusual status
Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs
Maintain safe and clean working environment and support QEP/CQI activities
