Position Overview
The Business Wire Newsroom Lead is responsible for demonstrating effective communication and leadership skills while managing a newsroom operations team. This role also involves performing general editorial duties.
Responsibilities
- Assume full responsibility for a team, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and efficiently.
- Perform regular sweeps to ensure no items are pending (emails, messages, monitoring tasks).
- Assign press releases and complete quality checks on orders.
- Serve as a main point of contact for handling high-profile projects.
- Prioritize workload in the newsroom to ensure high-profile and/or high-priority projects take precedence.
- Anticipate and identify problems, and take appropriate action to resolve them.
- Serve as a liaison to operations and sales managers, keeping them informed of client concerns or problems.
- Assist newsroom personnel with complex or unusual news-release and/or client situations.
- Offer guidance on proper escalation and handling of problematic copy.
- Work with sensitive clients.
- Demonstrate effective leadership by leading by example and ensuring newsroom staff meets management expectations.
- Effectively evaluate the day-to-day performance of direct reports and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.
- Coordinate recruiting, onboarding, and training of new editors.
- Oversee ongoing training of experienced editors as needed.
- Directly manage team members and handle people management tasks, including:
- Managing Time and PTO requests in Workday.
- Goal setting and tracking.
- Writing and conducting annual Performance Reviews.
- Team scheduling.
- Overseeing team and individual motivation and discipline.
- Communicate with fellow team leads to stay informed on current pending releases, issues, etc.
- Participate in monthly operations meetings or review materials and recordings if unable to attend, and ensure necessary information is relayed to direct reports.
- Conduct regular team and 1:1 meetings with direct reports.
- Compile designated monthly reports.
- Create, update, and maintain various team-specific documents on SharePoint.
- Provide help with testing and proofing resource documentation as requested.
- Act as a lead member and participant of the Content Approval Team, helping to approve first release drafts for new clients and guiding editors through questionable copy situations.
- Handle all essential duties of a Newsroom Editor, as needed.
Requirements
- Proven experience with all aspects of the Newsroom Editor role, including:
- Handling VIP clients.
- Prioritizing workload.
- Accurately distributing press releases with complicated distributions and formats.
- Previous training and/or manager experience preferred.
- Strong organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to work under time constraints and deadlines.
- Excellent and adaptive verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize time to maximize the greatest overall return on effort spent.
- Ability to probe for sufficient information to determine the significance and urgency of a specific task and devote the appropriate amount of time to any given task based upon its relative impact on the successful completion of key job objectives.
