Salary: $180,000 - $210,000 USD (annual base pay range) Location Type: Hybrid (based in a to-be-determined city in Texas) Employment Type: Full-time


Position Overview

The New York Times is seeking an experienced, Texas-based Senior Editor to shape and expand its coverage of the state. Texas is a critical hub for national discourse in politics, culture, and business. This role is part of a broader investment in the Times's Texas coverage, aiming to build a more robust journalistic presence across various desks. The ideal candidate will have deep roots and relationships in Texas and within The New York Times newsroom, possessing a strong vision for leveraging the organization's resources to increase impact and audience engagement in the state.


Responsibilities

  • Manage an expanded team to set the journalistic agenda for Texas.
  • Oversee an experienced team of editors and reporters working from Texas for the National desk.
  • Develop staffing plans and hire a team for the Texas hub.
  • Lead and understand coverage lines across desks to create a cohesive Texas report.
  • Convene staff across desks for brainstorming and coverage discussions, suggesting stories and lines of coverage.
  • Oversee efforts to innovate in story presentation and audience building within Texas.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and The Times's mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the National Editor.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of journalistic and management experience, with the ability to make sound, independent judgments about quality and process.
  • 5+ years of experience serving as a leader on coverage spanning subjects and desks.
  • Experience managing a team and collaborating effectively.
  • Demonstrated creative instincts that go beyond traditional text formats.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom's needs evolve.
  • An openness to trying new storytelling approaches.
