The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Movement Communications Specialist (Africa). This role is ideal for an experienced communicator, campaigner, or community organizer with extensive experience connecting, convening, and collaborating across Africa, who is passionate about bringing people together around a common cause. Reporting to the Manager, Global Movement Communications, you will be part of the Movement Communications team and the wider Communications Department, focusing on building bridges and shared understanding within the movement, with a particular emphasis on the Africa region.

Requirements

  • Excellent written English and fluency in at least one other African language.
  • Good knowledge of Wikimedia communities’ dynamics, policies, cultures, and channels.
  • A natural collaborator with a supportive attitude towards team efforts.
  • Well organized, skilled at handling logistic tasks (scheduling, organizing, notetaking, etc.), efficient, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to engage and facilitate dialogue with volunteers across various formats, including virtual meetings, on-wiki discussions, and in-person events.
  • Experience working in a multilingual and multicultural environment.
  • On-wiki experience contributing to Wikimedia projects.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience related to users with extended Wikimedia user rights (admins, stewards, checkusers etc.).
  • Familiarity or direct experience with free knowledge communities, the education sector, and/or open source culture.

Responsibilities

  • Connections & Dialogue: Support building connection, trust, and understanding with communities through two-way dialogue within the movement in Africa.
  • Wikipedia@25: Assist in celebrating Wikipedia's 25th anniversary by planning and supporting community events globally.
  • Deploying Software: Collaborate with the team to facilitate the deployment of product and technology features onto relevant Wikis.
  • Movement Pulse: Monitor relevant community channels for news, incidents, and requests, understanding key discussions to stay informed about the movement.
  • Mapping: Contribute to mapping editor communities and the Wikimedia movement in the African region, with a focus on Product and Tech engagement, users with extended rights, and community needs/priorities.
  • Implementing Insights: Inform communities about the Foundation's work, aligning with recommendations from Movement Communications Insights.
  • Translations: Coordinate translation requests, track and manage budgets, and maintain communication with the network of translators.
  • Organizational Support: Undertake occasional assignments for other organizational priorities as directed by the manager.
