Requirements

Candidates should have 3-7 years of experience leading engineering teams, with a focus on data engineering or backend systems. Strong technical grounding in data platforms, pipelines, and modern cloud technologies is required. Experience building or supporting data systems that integrate into products, personalization, or AI workflows is necessary. A great understanding of how data systems succeed and fail, and a willingness to experiment with teams is needed. A track record of treating engineers as humans, not fungible resources, and excellent listening and communication skills that translate well to a remote work environment are essential. An entrepreneurial spirit and passion for Axios’ mission are preferred.

Responsibilities

The Engineering Manager will directly support individual engineers through 1:1s, coaching, and feedback. They will help cross-functional teams work productively with effective prioritization and resourcing. The manager will drive the delivery of clean, reliable data pipelines powering personalization, editorial tooling, and AI applications. They will partner with product managers and analysts to integrate data into products for audience growth and improved user experiences. Responsibilities also include hiring and onboarding a diverse team of data engineers, fostering an inclusive environment, and creating processes that help engineers focus, experiment, and deliver. The manager will shape Axios’ data strategy by building scalable platforms while ensuring transparency, documentation, and long-term resilience, and help maintain a culture that balances healthy urgency with the need for downtime.
