Join a team of curious, creative people who care deeply about what they build. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to help grow and support our engineering team. At ReadMe, we have a strong, people-first engineering culture, and we’re excited to find someone who will help us nurture it as we scale. If you’re passionate about developer tools, empathetic leadership, and working cross-functionally to build amazing products, you’ll feel right at home here.

We're a small team of humans (and one owl) working together to shape the developer landscape through documentation! That’s where you come in. 🦉

Who we are

ReadMe helps companies build beautiful, personalized, and interactive developer hubs. If you’ve ever visited the developer docs for Apple or Notion, you’ve used ReadMe! We love what we do because it’s so much more than just docs. We’re providing tools for teams to create and manage beautiful documentation with ease. You can read more about what it’s like to work at ReadMe on our careers page.

We've written on our blog in the past about how we interview, and feel free to browse our other blog posts as well if it strikes your fancy!

What you'll do here

  • Maintain and expand the culture of not just the engineering team, but the company in general. From inside jokes to engineering practices, you’ll be a huge influence in how the company works.
  • Have a large say in the roadmap, both from a resourcing perspective (what the engineering team has bandwidth for) and from a product perspective (what you think we should be working on).
  • Directly manage and support a team of engineers, enabling them to do their best work.
  • Mentor engineers to make sure they’re able to be the best versions of themselves at ReadMe.
  • Write code! All our managers stay hands-on with the product.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience to build a seamless user journey.

You'll love this job if you are...

  • Excited to help build a developer experience that you’d want to use!
  • Have experience as a technical manager with a focus on growth and mentorship.
  • Looking to be part of a company that cares about its employees, and who rewards you for caring about your team.
  • Believe that companies and the products they produced are deeply intertwined, and excited to invest time and energy into both.
  • Can bring a bit of necessary structure and process, but also believe people do their best work if trusted and supported.
  • Sometimes want the opportunity to talk to and work directly with customers.
  • Want to build something millions of developers use and love.
  • Excited to do great work with people you like, while having a bit of fun in the process.

How you'll grow

  • Within one month:
    • Get to know the team, product, and codebase.
    • Start thinking through what success looks like over the next year.
    • Build relationships across Product, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience.
  • Within a few months, you'll:
    • Become involved in product planning and engineering resourcing.
    • Match team members with projects that play to their strengths.
    • Help guide technical decisions and outline team goals.
  • Within your first year, you'll:
    • Deliver thoughtful annual reviews and development plans.
    • Support promotions and career growth across the team.
    • Foster a team culture that’s collaborative, curious, and aligned with ReadMe’s mission.

Hiring Process

  • Submit your resume and a personality-filled cover letter, detailing what excites you about the intersection of visual design and engineering.
  • If there's a potential fit, you'll have a 30-minute phone chat with Greg, our CEO and Founder, to discuss the role and your experiences.
  • Following that, you'll have a second 45-minute phone interview with one of our current Engineering Managers to dive deeper into technical aspects.
