Data Science Manager

Location: Bellevue, Washington (Hybrid) or Remote in Miami, Florida

Position Overview

OfferUp is seeking an experienced and visionary Data Science Manager to lead and scale its high-impact Data Science team. This role operates at the intersection of product, engineering, and business strategy, focusing on building intelligent systems to power the OfferUp marketplace. The Data Science Manager will be responsible for advancing data science maturity, driving innovation in core ML capabilities, and enabling trustworthy, scalable solutions that shape how millions of users transact safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an analytics advisor to solve business problems using data.
• Partner with product, engineering, and design leaders to influence the roadmap with data-driven insights and ML strategy.
• Translate ambiguous business challenges into ML-driven solutions, from exploration to production deployment.
• Work with the executive team and business partners to define product requirements, provide analytical support, and create models to enhance customer safety.
• Identify opportunities and execute results across the company in areas such as product search, personalization recommender systems, crime risk modeling, and user reputation.
• Contribute to the development of end-to-end experimentation-forward product improvements, from conception and research to offline testing, live A/B testing, and production deployment.
• Leverage the latest machine learning technologies to solve complex business problems.
• Develop and grow the data scientists on the team, supporting their career advancement.

Requirements

• 8+ years of demonstrated experience with machine learning or data science.
• 5+ years of experience managing a team.
• Expertise with modeling in Python.
• Proficiency in data manipulation using SQL.
• Hands-on experience in predictive modeling and analysis to solve real business problems.
• Strong background in analysis, problem-solving, data structures, and algorithm development.
• Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related technical field.
• Experience in Trust & Safety, Risk domains, Search, Advertising, or Experimentation.
• Knowledge of: entity extraction, semantics in text, image recognition, recommender systems, ranking, LDA, and classification.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Target Compensation

• $225,000 - $240,000
