Position Overview

The New York Times is seeking a Community Engagement Manager to support its rapidly growing games subscription business. This role is responsible for executing strategies to engage with players and creators of The New York Times' popular games and puzzles, including the Crossword and Spelling Bee. This is a remote-friendly position based in New York City and may require weekend work.

You will collaborate with the Deputy Editorial Director to identify and connect with existing and potential audiences, working across all games and the "Gameplay" vertical. You will also help pioneer new methods for gathering feedback and puzzle submissions from a diverse user base.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and strategize on the best channels to reach potential and existing audiences for our puzzles.
  • Develop and manage existing social media platforms, including TikTok.
  • Create engaging content for the puzzle community and audience, such as the Puzzle Personality Quiz.
  • Filter and analyze feedback from social media and comments for actionable insights.
  • Write, produce, and moderate community forums, such as The Spelling Bee Forum.
  • Write and edit social media copy.
  • Create, execute, and moderate audience-building projects.
  • Collaborate with the core news audience team, marketing, and product teams to promote significant game launches and events.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and the company's mission to seek truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the Editorial Director, Games.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in social media, communications, reporting, or engagement within a consumer-facing field (e.g., entertainment, media, games).
  • Proven experience creating written and verbal messaging tailored for online audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex workflows and ensure accuracy across multiple projects.
  • Proficiency with major social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
  • Basic experience with web production and familiarity with web tools and interfaces.
  • Basic knowledge of journalism ethics and standards.
  • Experience moderating online communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An appreciation for word games and puzzles.
  • Proficiency with social media analytics tools.
  • Experience building and managing branded social media accounts.
