The Associate Archive Engineer supports the technical infrastructure and workflows of the Archives team through tool development, system administration, and process optimization. This role is instrumental in maintaining and evolving the systems that enable digital preservation, asset management, and operational transparency. The ideal candidate is technically adept, organized, and passionate about building tools that support archival and library workflows.

This role is anticipated to be a hybrid work position, with some work on-site and some work-from-home. The home studio for this role is Irvine, CA. This is a 12-month temporary position.

What You Bring to the Table

Priorities can often change in a fast-paced environment like ours, so this role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Engineering & Tool Administration

  • Develop, maintain, and improve internal tools using PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and Python within plugin-based environments.
  • Implement UI enhancements to improve usability, accessibility, and user experience in archival systems.
  • Administer and configure Jira projects: manage workflows, issue types, custom fields, permissions, and project settings.
  • Design and maintain Jira Automations to reduce manual work and improve team efficiency.
  • Build and maintain Slack workflows to automate common tasks and enhance cross-team communication.
  • Triage and troubleshoot technical issues, escalating when appropriate.
  • Provide technical support for the Physical Archive’s collections management software.
  • Support the Library’s integrated library system and related tools.

Agile Operations & Workflow Support

  • Act as Agile/Jira administrator for the team, maintaining logical, up-to-date boards aligned with current priorities.
  • Assist team members in writing clear, actionable, and technically detailed Jira tickets.
  • Document and improve internal team processes for greater transparency and efficiency.
  • Create and maintain Jira dashboards that provide visibility into team workflows and component-level progress.
  • Report on sprint progress, team metrics, and team output to support strategic planning.

Minimum Requirements

Experience

  • Proficiency with PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and plugin development frameworks.
  • Strong experience administering Jira projects and building Jira Automations.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, Jira, Confluence and continuous improvement practices.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.

Key Attributes

  • A detail-oriented mindset with an interest in archives, preservation, or information management.

Extra Points

  • Familiarity with physical collections management tools (e.g., EmbARK or similar systems used in museums and archives).
  • Experience with integrated library systems (ILS), particularly open-source platforms like Koha.
  • Hands-on experience with Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems such as ResourceSpace, including metadata-driven workflows.
