Requirements

  • Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school with high academic credentials
  • Admission to practice in good standing as a member of a U.S. jurisdiction
  • Ten (10) plus years of experience providing legal counsel to clients in-house and/or at a large law firm
  • Experience directly handling audits or inquiries from government agencies

Responsibilities

  • Serve as legal advisor for Merchandising Department on general legal advice, laws and regulations affecting merchandise (including product evaluation, development, and compliance programs), supplier agreements (negotiation of standard agreements, development and drafting of custom contracts involving extended terms, exclusivity, marketing/space funding, and rebate structures), commercial disputes (pre- and post-dispute counsel, analysis, strategy, negotiation, settlement drafting, litigation support), and supplier bankruptcy matters
  • Serve as legal advisor to Quality Department on product standards, regulation, testing and analysis, product specification and labeling, and pre- and post-production product regulatory matters at all administrative levels
  • Provide legal support in managing the private label business, including SOPs, investigations, vendor qualification, and compliance
  • Draft and negotiate contracts for other business functions including IT, transportation, and marketing
  • Partner with the Compliance Department on product investigations and inquiries by governmental entities (e.g., CPSC, FDA, EPA, state and local agencies) regarding safety and compliance of regulated consumer products
  • Partner with the Compliance Department on company product recalls and withdrawals, including those with CPSC, FDA, EPA, and state agencies
  • Provide general legal support and training on merchandise regulatory issues
  • Work closely with business partners, outside counsel, vendors, and government agencies on a variety of issues
  • Maintain current knowledge of changes in regulatory trends to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations
  • Foster a workplace with high ethical and legal standards promoting respect, inclusion, innovation, creativity, confidentiality, integrity, responsibility, and excellence in client service
  • Perform other tasks and duties as required or assigned
