Candidates must possess an active, unrestricted RN license with multistate/compact licensure privileges, and be able to obtain licensure in non-compact states as needed. A minimum of 5 years of relevant nursing experience is required, with at least 3 years of clinical experience specifically in Behavioral Health and/or Substance Abuse, including experience in acute care, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs. A minimum of 1 year of Utilization Management experience in concurrent review or prior authorization is also necessary. Strong decision-making skills and clinical judgment in independent scenarios, along with proficiency with phone systems, clinical documentation tools, and navigating multiple digital platforms, are essential. An Associate's degree in nursing (RN) is required, with a BSN being preferred. Candidates must also commit to attending a mandatory 3-week training with 100% participation.
The Utilization Management Nurse Consultant will apply critical thinking and evidence-based clinical criteria specific to Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse to evaluate inpatient and outpatient services requiring precertification. They will conduct clinical reviews via phone and electronic documentation, collaborating with healthcare providers to gather necessary information and using established guidelines to authorize services or escalate to Medical Directors as needed. Responsibilities also include navigating multiple computer systems efficiently while maintaining accurate documentation, performing sedentary work that primarily involves extended periods of sitting, and utilizing strong organizational, multitasking, and prioritization skills to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Flexibility to provide coverage for other Utilization Management (UM) nurses and participate in occasional on-call rotations, including some weekends and holidays, is also required.
